If you are currently interviewing, chances are your face-to-face interview has changed to a phone or video interview. Remember, everyone is a little out of their comfort zone. It is important to remain flexible and positive. Here are some tips to help you through the process.
Test your internet connection: Check your internet connection speed to help ensure your video will come across smoothly. Make sure your interviewer has your cell phone number should something happen with your connection. If something does go wrong, try to relax and try to make light of the situation. How you behave under stress is an important signal to your interviewer.
Prepare your interview space: Choose a quiet, well-lit space with a neutral background. Video interviews give a peek into your personal life, so make sure that your space is clean and free of distractions.
Dress the part: Just because you’re meeting your interviewers virtually doesn’t mean you should take the interview any less seriously. It’s important to dress as you would if you were going to the interview in person.
Practice beforehand: Do a couple of practice runs with friends or family to get comfortable and ask them to share their feedback.
Be genuine and patient: During these challenging times, be patient if a recruiter or hiring manager are taking longer than usual to get back to you. Without the ability for everyone to physically be in one room to provide feedback and collectively agree, your interviewers may need a bit longer than usual to make a decision.
